Stadio Diego Armando Maradona

Stadiums

Description

The Diego Armando Maradona Stadium (Italian: Stadio Diego Armando Maradona) is located in the city of Naples and is the home stadium of Napoli Football Club. This stadium has a rich history, dating back to its construction in 1959, when it was named Stadio del Sole, which translates as "Stadium of the Sun".

In the early 1960s, the San Paolo Stadium, also named after the Apostle Paul, became the venue for several matches of the Olympic tournament. The stadium held about 80 thousand spectators. However, in 1989, before the World Cup, it was reconstructed. In 1990, the stadium hosted games of the World Cup, including the semi-final between Italy and Argentina. The stadium has a capacity of 60,240 seats, making it the third largest stadium in Italy, behind only the Giuseppe Meazza in Milan and the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

On November 26, 2020, the stadium was renamed in honor of the legendary Napoli footballer Diego Armando Maradona, who passed away that same year. This decision was officially confirmed on December 4, 2020. Stadio Diego Armando Maradona now represents the legacy and contribution of this football icon to the history of Naples and world football.
