Ak Bars Arena is a unique football stadium, the first in Russia built specifically for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Since its opening, the arena has become a center of attraction for the most significant events and activities of international scale, such as the 2013 Universiade, the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In 2019, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 45th WorldSkills Competition were held here.
The architectural concept of the stadium was developed by the English company Populous, known for its projects of such world-famous sports facilities as Wembley and Emirates in London, United Center in Chicago, Soccer City in Moscow, in Johannesburg and the Olympic Stadium in Sydney. The architectural concept of Ak Bars Arena is based on the image of a water lily, which gives the stadium a unique look.
The uniqueness of Ak Bars Arena lies in its engineering solutions. The spans of the beam more than 120 meters long and the translucent roof consoles, resting on only 8 support points, create the impression of the airiness of the structure, without losing reliability. There are more metal structures in the roof of the stadium than in the roof of London's Wembley, and their total weight is 12 thousand tons.
