2026 UEFA Champions League Final
Description
The Ferenc Puskas Stadium in Budapest was one of Hungary's most significant sports arenas, playing a key role in the country's life for decades. Built in 1953 and originally known as the Népstadion, it could seat over 100,000 spectators. Its construction was a major post-war undertaking, and its opening was marked by a match between Honvéd and Spartak Moscow, attracting tens of thousands of fans.
The arena has made history in world sports thanks to legendary matches. In May 1954, the Hungarian national team crushed England 7-1 here. The stadium also hosted the European Athletics Championships twice and numerous international competitions. In 2001, it was renamed in honor of Ferenc Puskas, a prominent striker for the Hungarian national team.
In addition to sporting events, the venue has become the center of large-scale concerts. In 1986, Queen performed here during their Magic Tour—a concert featuring Freddie Mercury became one of the most memorable in Budapest history. The stadium was also used for filming the movie "Munich."
In 2014, the national team's last match took place, after which the old stadium was demolished. In its place, a modern arena with a capacity of 65,000 spectators was built, where major tournaments and concerts are held.
