Feyenoord

Description

Feyenoord Stadium – famous football stadium located in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Home arena of the local football club of the same name.

Feyenoord Stadium was built in 1937. It also has a second name - De Kuip, which translated means “bowl”. This nickname was given to the location by local fans due to the unusual shape of the facility's structure.

The original capacity of the stadium was 64 thousand people. When building the arena, the architects envisioned a completely new stadium, unlike any other on the continent, with two free-hanging tiers and no obstructions to block the view. Role models included Highbury, where the West and East stands were built as double stands, and New York's Yankee Stadium. When designing Feyenoord, a lot of glass materials were used, which gives the arena an additional feeling of space.

In 1949, the capacity of the stadium was increased to 69 thousand spectators, and after a large-scale reconstruction in 1994, on the contrary, it became smaller and currently stands at 51,117 people. A little later in 1999, Feyenoord underwent a significant amount of restoration and interior work prior to its use as a venue for the UEFA Euro 2000 tournament. At the same time, the number of viewers remained at the same level.

Feyenoord is also actively used as a concert venue. Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and many other celebrities performed here.
