Slovenia national football team

Description

The Slovenia national team traces its history back to 1991 - after the country separated from Yugoslavia. The Football Association of Slovenia was formed in 1920, and it has been a member of FIFA and UEFA since 1992. The national team played its first official matches at the 1996 European Championship but did not go beyond the qualification stage. The team made it to the group stage of Euro 2000 but failed to reach the play-offs. The team also took part in the World Championships in 2002 and 2010. However, it didn't advance from the group stage, taking one of the last places in its groups. As of March 2024, Slovenes occupy 55th place in the FIFA ranking.

At the 2024 Euro qualifying stage, Slovenia played in Group H with Denmark, Finland, Kazakhstan, Northern Ireland, and San Marino. Both Slovenes and Danes scored 22 points at the end of 10 games. With an equal number of matches won, lost, and drawn, Denmark indirectly took the first place and Slovenia the second. It allowed the country to enter the group stage. The biggest victory of the Slovenes so far was the match against San Marino with a score of 0:4. Rasmus Højlund (Denmark) became the top scorer of Group H, and Benjamin Šeško (Slovenia) took the second place.

Now, the Slovenes will play in Group C with Denmark, Serbia, and England. Slovenia and Serbia last took part in the group stage in 2000, while Denmark and England played in the last European Championship, where England took 2nd place.
