Description
The Macedonian national football team represents North Macedonia on the international stage. Managed by the Macedonian Football Federation, the team became a member of FIFA and UEFA in 1994. Despite the fact that the national team has never participated in the World Championships, their debut at the European Championships took place in 2021, which became a significant event in the history of Macedonian football.
The Macedonian national team played its first international match in the qualifying tournament for Euro 1996. In a group with such strong opponents as Denmark, Spain and Belgium, the Macedonians showed a decent performance, finishing the tournament in fourth place. One of the most memorable matches of that period was the draw with the England team in the qualification for Euro 2004 and Euro 2008, as well as the victory over Croatia in the qualification for Euro 2008.
The qualification for Euro 2020 became historic for the Macedonian national team. The team took third place in its group, ahead of Slovenia, Israel and Latvia. The Macedonians qualified for the play-offs thanks to victory in their UEFA Nations League group, where they beat Kosovo and Georgia. This success allowed the team to reach the final stage of the European Championship for the first time in history.
The Macedonian national team has not yet achieved significant success in the qualifying tournaments for the World Championships. The most realistic chance was in 1998, when the team could reach the play-offs, but were defeated in the last two matches against Lithuania. In the qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the team took second place in the group, losing only to Germany, and for the first time in history reached the play-offs. In the semi-finals, the Macedonians sensationally defeated Italy, but lost to Portugal in the final.
