Description

The Croatia national football team began its existence in 1990. In 1991, it joined FIFA and UEFA. The first international match of the Croatian national team was on October 17, 1990, against the United States national team. The Croats then won with a score of 2:1. The team took part in the World Cup six times, twice becoming the bronze medalist (1998 and 2022) and once winning silver in 2018. The Croats also participated in the European Championship 6 times, but they have not yet managed to go beyond the quarterfinals of the playoffs. In 2023, the national team won silver at the UEFA Nations League tournament. As of March 2024, the Croats occupy 10th place in the FIFA ranking.

In the Euro 2024 qualifying stage, the Croats were in Group D with Turkey, Wales, Armenia, and Latvia. At the end of 8 games, the Croatian national team took second place with 16 points, losing the championship to the Turkish national team with 17 points. Croats' biggest victory was the match against Latvia with a score of 5:0. Petković scored the first goal in the 3rd minute. Andrej Kramarić became the top scorer with 4 goals.

Having advanced to the next stage, Croatia got into Group B with Spain, Italy, and Albania. Spain became the Euro champions in 1964, 2008, and 2012, Italy in 1968 and 2020, while the Croats' greatest result was reaching the quarterfinals. However, the Croatian team can reach the 1/8 finals of the play-offs if it is the best of the third-place teams in the group stage.
