FIFA Scandal: Kevin Lamour's Dismissal and Infantino's Weakening Position
A new scandal has erupted at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA): the organization has dismissed Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour. According to Sky News, the reason was Lamour's public disagreement with FIFA President Gianni Infantino's policies. Lamour criticized plans to sell part of the World Cup rights to private investors and even called for Infantino's resignation, declaring his willingness to lose his job for his beliefs.
"If I lose my job, so be it," Lamour said, emphasizing his preparedness to accept the consequences. On August 17, FIFA officially confirmed the termination of his contract, expressing gratitude for two years of service.
Following this dismissal, Infantino's position continues to weaken. The human rights organization FairSquare sent a letter to the FIFA committee demanding that he be disqualified from running in the 2027 elections. The reason given was a violation of the presidential term limit: according to the statutes, a president can hold the post no more than three times. Infantino was elected in 2016, 2019, and 2023, but his first term was not counted due to the early end of Sepp Blatter's term.
These events are taking place against the backdrop of plans to create a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise, to sell tournament rights, which has drawn sharp criticism from international football organizations. Although Infantino abandoned the idea, his reputation has already suffered.
